Module 5 - Technology Lesson Demonstration Assignment

Technology Lesson Demonstration Assignment

Educator: Jared Moya

Class: Mathematics - 9yo

Student Composition:8 nationalities, 3 ELLs.

Unit: Essential Unit 10 - Geometry

Lesson Objective:

Formative assessment review of key terms and concepts from Essential Unit 10.

The Student Wills (TSWs):

2. TSW recognize and draw lines, rays, points, and angles with different measures.

3. TSW determine the measure of an angle using manipulatives and a protractor.

4. TSW use addition and subtraction to solve problems with unknown angle measures.

6. TSW observe characteristics of quadrilaterals and triangles and classify them.

7. TSW explore lines, the concept of symmetry and identify and draw examples.

Procedure:

1. The 11 students will be divided into 5 groups.

2. Teacher will use the Question Formulation Technique (QFT) to guide students toward the leading question: Based on the TSWs on the board and what you have learned so far in Essential Unit 10 - Geometry, what skills do you think are important for students to know in order to master this unit?

3. Using the TSWs as a guide, they will first be asked to make a list of 10 skills and then turn those skills into question format.

4. Each group will be given a tablet and a class login code for the website Blooket.com.

3. Once students login, they will create a Blooket quiz using their 10 questions.

4. Once finished, Blooket quizzes will be randomly assigned to other groups.

Student Differentiation:

1. Flexible Grouping: Groups will be differentiated so as to ensure ELLs, and those students with special learning or behavioral concerns are properly supported.

2. Scaffolded Assessment: For ELLs and others with special needs, the questions can be printed out in advance and placed in a pile face-down.

As a classroom technology tool, Blooket.com’s contribution to the lesson depends on how well it aligns with the learning objectives, the quality of the question sets, and the preferences of the students. I would argue that the technology tool is beneficial for student learning if it helps them review the content, engage with the material, and receive timely feedback on their performance. However, if Blooket.com is used too frequently, too randomly, or too competitively, it might become inadequate for student learning as it could distract them from the main learning goals (TSWs), overwhelm them with information, or discourage them from participating. I chose this tool precisely because I believe that it would be used in a way that is beneficial for student learning. Moreover, I think Blooket.com is a tool that will increase student engagement while also giving students a degree of ownership of their learning.

This lesson plan could be differentiated in a number of ways if an educator utilized technology in the appropriate ways. One option would be to provide students with the option of using alternative programs, such as Microsoft PowerPoint or even Microsoft Word, to generate a list of review questions that is comparable to the one they currently have. The lesson plan could be further scaffolded for students who are learning English as a second language by providing those students with specific examples of skills for each TSW, or even possible questions to guide them further along. It is possible that additional time could be allotted for the completion of the assignment as well.
