Module 8 - Video Discussion Thread: Reflection

Enhancing Classroom Inclusion through Technology and Assistive Devices

Video Transcript

Looking back on this course, I have gained valuable insights and experiences that have shaped my professional goals and enhanced my understanding of technology integration in the classroom. Throughout this course, I have engaged in collaborative discussions, utilized various technology tools, and explored current trends and future possibilities in educational technology. By highlighting two or three key lessons learned, discussing the challenges faced, describing the transformation experienced, and identifying what I intend to carry forward, one can adequately reflect on the outcomes of the course.

One of the fundamental lessons I have learned during this course is the significance of purposeful technology integration in the classroom. Technology should not be used for the sake of using it but rather to enhance and enrich the learning experiences of students (Harris & Crawford, 2020). Through discussions and case studies, I realized that identifying clear learning objectives and selecting appropriate technology tools to support those objectives is essential. By considering the pedagogical principles behind technology integration, such as active learning, student engagement, and differentiated instruction, I gained a deeper understanding of how technology can serve as a catalyst for instructional improvement.

Another key lesson from this course is the power of collaborative learning. Through the collaborative activities and discussions with my fellow students in this course and even the students in my own classroom, I discovered the immense value of sharing ideas, perspectives, and experiences related to technology practices in the classroom. Collaborative learning not only exposed me to a diverse range of innovative approaches but also challenged my existing beliefs and assumptions. Engaging in constructive dialogue and exchanging feedback fostered a supportive learning community where we could collectively explore different strategies for integrating technology effectively. This experience highlighted the importance of professional networks and organizations in promoting ongoing growth and development as an educator.

While navigating this course, one of the significant challenges I encountered was keeping pace with the rapid advancements in educational technology. As technology continues to evolve at an accelerated rate, it becomes crucial for educators to stay updated and adaptable. Overcoming this challenge required a proactive approach to continuously exploring new tools, applications, and trends. However, through this challenge, I also recognized the importance of embracing a growth mindset, being open to learning, and seeking opportunities for professional development to effectively leverage technology for instructional improvement. As my director often says, "Always keep growing!"

Additionally, this course has significantly transformed my mindset regarding technology integration in the classroom. Previously, I may have viewed technology as an add-on or a separate entity within the educational landscape. However, I now appreciate how technology should be seamlessly integrated into the fabric of teaching and learning. As noted by Groff & Mouza (2008), “Despite the tremendous push for educators to integrate technology into their classrooms, many have yet to do so and struggle to find consistent success with technology-based instruction” (p. 1). I have developed a greater appreciation for the potential of technology to enhance student engagement, promote critical thinking, facilitate collaboration, and personalize instruction. This shift in mindset has ignited a passion within me to explore innovative and effective ways of integrating technology into my instructional practices.

As I conclude this course, I intend to carry forward two critical elements: lifelong learning and collaboration. The ever-evolving nature of technology necessitates a commitment to ongoing professional development and continuous learning. Although my remote geographical location makes maintaining membership in professional organizations difficult, I do plan to try and participate in webinars and explore relevant online literature to better stay informed about emerging technologies and best practices. Furthermore, I value the power of collaboration and intend to foster meaningful connections with fellow educators here at my school to exchange ideas, resources, and experiences related to technology integration. As observed by Harrell and Bynum (2018), “effective professional development” is crucial for increasing the “level of technology integration in classrooms” (p. 13). As my school's current elementary team leader, I am uniquely positioned to facilitate this dialogue. By embracing these elements, I hope to create a dynamic and technology-rich professional learning environment that empowers my students and supports their educational journey.

Moreover, this course has provided me with valuable lessons, challenges, and transformations. It has enhanced my understanding of purposeful technology integration, emphasized the power of collaboration, and transformed my mindset toward technology as an integral part of education. With a commitment to lifelong learning and collaboration, I am eager to implement these insights in my future classrooms and contribute to advancing technology practices for instructional improvement.
